As its mission, the National Conference of Governor's Schools commits to the following goals.
- Orientation:
To facilitate the creation and nurturing the growth and development of new
Governors' Schools.
- Research: To
stimulate discussion and collaboration in proposing and preparing research
relevant to Governors' Schools.
- Communication:
To promote and strengthen lines of communication communication between and
among those interested in Governors' Schools.
- Advocacy & Promotion:
To providing resources and support for fledgling programs and provide ideas
and materials to improve existing programs.
With these goals in mind, NCoGS maintains a list of current and proposed
projects. Look for additions to this list and the the Web site as tasks
are accomplished. See a chart of responsibilities
and status.
Newsletter
(Communication, Advocacy)
This goal has subsequently been reviewed and framed as a
monthly online newsletter, with its debut scheduled for November 2002. (completed)
- Fall Review of Summer Sessions (normally distributed at
fall conference)
- Spring Preview of Biennial Conference or Working Retreat
(normally distributed near mid-April)
- Inaugural issue to be completed and sent out by December
31, 2001: includes "Roll Call of the States" and article on
Teacher Recognition Day
Membership Drive
(Orientation, Advocacy & Promotion)
- Working to mine the current membership databases for
additional members (ongoing)
- Sending letter to state governors, advocacy groups, and
current members to solicit membership dues and explain benefits of
membership (ongoing)
Centralizing Communications
(Orientation, Communication, Advocacy & Promotion)
- Determine name according to articles of incorporation (completed)
- Examine possibility of filing our own articles or
incorporation and 401-3(c) non-profit status. (completed)
- Establish mailing address in Washington, DC, area, and
examine cost of 800 number with voice mailboxes. (attempted,
reversed)
- Maintain mailing list, and allow for individual user
addresses to be posted (ongoing)
- Establish online threaded discussion lists for active
conversations on topics of interest to the membership (ongoing)
- Develop Director's Primer and boost online NCoGS FAQs (ongoing)
- Develop means of introducing new members to NCoGS

- Letter to governor of West Virginia thanking him for
increasing funding for WV GS - on NCoGS letterhead (completed)
- Letter to governor and ranking legislative members of
education committees of Tennessee expressing disappointment at cancellation
of Governor's School programs in TN - on NCoGS letterhead (completed)
- Letter to all governors introducing NCoGS and requesting
them to identify and communicate with Governor's School programs in their
states - on DE governor letterhead (in progress)
- Letter to national and state gifted advocacy groups and
individuals introducing NCoGS and encouraging membership - national heads on
NCoGS letterhead, state folks on DE governor letterhead (goal under revision)
- Letter to current and past membership - includes membership
form - that encourages membership and introduces new efforts. (annual process)
- Working to develop a coordinated and current membership
list, possibly accessible by password to specific members of Board. - on
